More power and less weight: two Very Good Things for a sport motorcycle and two things that BMW has brought to the S in
good measure. compared to its' predecessor, the new bike is 25% more powerful with 19% more torque, and weighs 57 pounds less than the previous model.
With 122 horsepower and only 420 pounds (dry weight), the R1200S has a power-to-weight ratio that is very competitive
amongst twin-cylinder sportbikes. The comfort and safety of the BMW, though, is in a class of its own. For instance:
a new lightweight two-channel antilock brake system is optional on the S. With a weight penalty of only 3.3 pounds and
the option of switching the ABS off for race-track use, there is no reason for even the most hard-core sport rider to go
without this important safety feature.
The R1200S features a light and stiff 3-piece frame structure of steel and aluminum tubing, extra-light magnesium front fairing support, 18-LED tail light, huge 320-mm front brake rotors, and an underseat dual-tailpipe exhaust. The balance-shaft equipped Boxer engine is the most powerful BMW twin ever, with dual ignition, knock control, two oxygen sensors, and a 3-way catalytic converter. An extra-wide rear wheel for the best choice of sticky tires and high-performance Ohlins sports suspension with variable ride height are available to build the ultimate sport BMW twin.
Even with all the sport-riding focus of the S, the riding position has been designed to be the most comfortable in its class, without undue pressure on the rider’s wrists. A tank bag and rear sports bag are designed to give carrying capacity for a long-weekend trips. An available rear cowling covers the passenger seat when riding solo.
