The 167-hp K1200S

  The 2-tone colours
And now for something completely different: The K1200S with 167 hp

A small wheelie The K1200S offers supersport performance balanced with comfort and safety. This bike has performance and handling that rivals or beats any open-class bike in the world. Nonetheless, this is a “grown-up’s” bike, with comfortable seating for rider and passenger, low-maintenance shaft drive, and the ultimate safety feature: new Integral ABS Generation II brakes. Accessories such as tank bags and expandable saddlebags mean that the amazing ability of the K1200S can be enjoyed all day on a sport-riding tour.

It’s hard to pick one feature of this bike as a highlight, but the engine is the obvious starting point. With 167 horsepower, 130 N.m. of torque and a redline of 11,000 rpm (thanks to a valvetrain based on BMW’s Formula One automobile designs), this powerplant also delivers 70% of its torque from 3000 rpm up.

The chassis features a bridge-truss type aluminum frame using the engine as a stressed member. Rear suspension is the new lightweight Paralever as used on the R1200GS. The front suspension is a new design known as Duolever which uses forged aluminum links to guide the front wheel. At both ends, optional Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) can adjust for loading and road condition by the press of a handlebar-mounted button. This chassis is narrow, which makes it easier to reach the ground and allows the footpegs to be mounted low for legroom while preserving cornering clearance. An extra-low seat is optional.

What did they leave out? Well, uh, weight. The K1200S, at a wet weight of 248 kg, is 37 kg (81 lb) lighter than its predecessor. It is also lighter than or within ounces of the weight of its' competitors. None of these competitors have the BMW's features such as maintenance-free shaft drive or ABS brakes.

But that’s all numbers. How does it ride? Read on…

STANDARD AND OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

Bird's-eye view Standard equipment includes antilock brakes (Generation II Semi-Integral; the hand lever operates both front and rear brakes and the foot lever operates the rear brake only), heated handgrips, a 12-volt accessory socket, hazard warning flashers, and self-cancelling turn signals. The standard anti-theft system uses a "smart" ignition key which cannot be copied and makes hotwiring impossible. The Safety Package includes stability control to limit rear wheel spin and tire pressure monitoring which will warn of a flat tire before it deflates to a dangerous level.
These original equipment options may also be fitted: The K1200S can be customized with a choice of accessories:
saddlebags and tankbag
  • New variable-capacity detachable sports pannier cases
  • Two sizes of water-protected tank bag
  • BMW Motorcycle Navigator II GPS with big-button controls
  • Centrestand
  • Sports Silencer for less weight and a throatier sound.
